Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora) has been a dependable and extremely colorful contribution to gardeners for many years now. With its coppery-red new fronds it is popular, beautiful and easily established. It’s a spreading plant that grows one to two feet in height, in partial to full shade.
Even the sori holding the spores on the undersides of the fronds are red. Broad evergreen two foot fronds eventually turn a deep green and remain elegant throughout the season as well as in the winter months.
With its drought tolerance it is an excellent low maintenance selection and is highly recommended as a lively addition to gardens in Zones 5 to 8. Really a lovely plant.
