Onychium japonicum, the carrot fern, is a graceful and airy decorative addition to lighten woodland settings. This Asian prefers a moist setting tempered with good drainage. The broadly triangular, finely divided fronds are a bright shiny green, have a long stem and form a lacy 1 to 2 foot arch of open foliage. While generally considered to be deciduous, if encouraged by mild fall weather it holds its fronds well into the season. Relatively rare in cultivation this highly ornamental selection adjusts to garden conditions in Zones 7 and 8 and thrives in Zones 9 and 10.
