Champion’s Wood Fern

Dryopteris championii

Champion's Wood Fern

Dryopteris championii, Champion’s wood fern, shimmers year round in the woodlands and is one of the best for flaunting evergreen fronds above snow levels in winter. Emerging foliage is fleetingly fleeced with minute silvery hairs soon yielding to the mature lacquered deep green foliage that distinguishes this beauty. Fronds ranging in height from 2 to 3 feet are open and airy giving a buoyant lightness to the surroundings. Do be advised and patient, however, as the new growth can be deceptively late in the spring. This import from Japan, China and Korea excels in gardens from Zone 5 to 9.
