Crested Martindale Male Fern

Dryopteris filix-mas 'Martindale Crested'

Crested Martindale Male Fern

Dryopteris filix-mas ‘Cristata Martindale’, Martindale crested male fern, is another of the many garden worthy cultivars of the male fern. (At one time British enthusiasts and collectors had named over one hundred varieties.)This one has widely spaced linear pinnae that terminate in showy tassels. The upwardly sweeping vase of deciduous fronds can reach two feet or more. This unique structure excels when surrounded by the unadorned type plant so that it stands out in the crowd. It is perfectly hardy in cold winter areas and does well in gardens from Zone 4
