Fancy Fern (Evergreen Wood Fern)

Dryopteris intermedia

Fancy Fern (Evergreen Wood Fern)

Dryopteris intermedia, Evergreen wood fern or fancy fern, is a worthy east coast native that is welcome especially in colder areas for its evergreen contribution to the winter landscape. Bluish green finely divided graceful fronds may reach three feet but are usually more modest in size. Folks on field trips (or cautiously and with permission in gardens) looking to confirm identification will find glandular hairs on the undersides of the fronds. Folks just looking for an ornamental will be pleased to have this consistent performer as a dependable show piece in the garden community from the cold of Zone 3 to the more amenable woodlands in Zones 4
