Lace Fern (Microlepia strigosa) is a soft, finely divided, gently spreading cover that is evergreen in Zones 9 to 11 and deciduous in Zones 7 and 8. The pale green 12″ to 24″ fronds have a hairy texture ranging from down to a thick coating of fluffy bristles. Best in shade, its native range extends from the Himalayas through Japan to Hawaii. Visitors to the islands will find that it is common and frequently used in making hula skirts and leis (as well as used for decoration in gardens indoors and out.)
