Asian Saber Fern

Polystichum neolobatum

Asian Saber Fern

Asian Saber Holly is a shiny, dark-green fern reaching 18” to 24”. Originally introduced to the Pacific Northwest, gardeners have found that it does well across the US to the East coast down to Florida. Its glossy green fronds are leathery and held stiffly upright to create an open, vase-shaped plant that is distinctive in the garden. Its fronds are so stiff that they do not collapse in the occasional snow showers in the Pacific Northwest, but remain fully upright and evergreen through the winter. Place Asian saber fern with soft-textured ferns and plants with paler green foliage for best contrast. Its unusual growth habit makes it eye-catching as a single specimen or interesting when planed en masse. Asian saber is also, very drought tolerant once established. A mature plant will form a rosette having huge, shimmering, reddish-gold scales along the stipes. Zone 5
