Tapering Glade Fern

Deparia pycnosora

Tapering Glade Fern

Deparia pycnosora, the tapering glade fern, has wandered around botanically for quite some time such that some may recognize it as Diplazium pycnocarpon or even (if you’re old enough) Athyrium pycnocarpon. By whatever name, it will slowly wander around in the garden as well. Two to four foot narrow deciduous fronds tapered at the base stretch outward from an upright stem. Fertile fronds are narrower and emerge later in the season. This eastern native is a favorite and prefers to be planted in rich moisture retentive soil and shade in Zones 4
