Tatting Fern

Athyrium filix-femina 'Frizelliae'

Tatting Fern

Commonly known as the Tatting Fern (Athyrium filix-femina ‘Frizelliae’) because the frond pattern resembles lace tatting (for those old enough to remember what tatting is! Even some of us at Casa Flora don’t.) Essentially the small pinnae are – yes – bead-like, and edge the fronds like a parade of half-moon shaped greenery.

This deciduous cultivar is essentially a low grower to 1 foot or occasionally higher. But at whatever height this fern is always a conversation piece. The new growth is frequently very late in the season, and while it appears to be delicate this plant is hardy and sturdy. Use it in Zones 4 through 8.
