Thick Stemmed Wood Fern

Dryopteris crassirhizoma

Thick Stemmed Wood Fern

Dryopteris crassirhizoma, the thick stemmed wood fern, is a standout among the excellent assortment of traditionally reliable and ornamental dryopteris. Lush kelly green fronds emerge from a crown covered with shaggy cinnamon colored scales and form a symmetrical vase 2 to 3 feet tall. This Asian import is wintergreen and quite adaptable being not only cold tolerant but heat tolerant as well. It is happiest in traditional woodland soil and light shade and a grouping brightens the garden’s darker green areas. It is admirably suited for and admired in Zones 5
